Краткое содержание

Действие происходит в начале XVIII века в небольшом герцогстве на юге Германии.
Сын герцога тяжело болен. Доктор Атаназиус считает, что медицина в данном случае бессильна. Помочь больному может только магия, которой он владеет, но прибегает к ее помощи редко, т.к. знает о возможных необратимых последствиях. Придворная дама Хельга фон Лауденхайм убеждает Атаназиуса использовать магию. Ведь доктор ранее вернул здоровье таким способом ее матери. Атаназиус поддается на уговоры. Он применяет известные ему магические формулы и заклинания, в ответ на которые появляется демон Асмодей. Демон оглашает свои условия: сын герцога будет абсолютно здоров в обмен на человеческое сердце, которое выберет сам Асмодей. По истечении одного года сердце должно заменяться на другое.
Успешное излечение сына герцога приносит Атаназиусу богатство и любовь Хельги.
Ровно через год появляется Асмодей и забирает сердце Хельги. Церковный суд обвиняет Атаназиуса в колдовстве и приговаривает к казни. Его готов спасти герцог, если доктор снова обратится к магии. Но Атаназиус после смерти Хельги поклялся навсегда отречься от магии. Во время казни Атаназиуса появляется дух Хельги. Чуть позже к нему присоединяется дух доктора Атаназиуса, покинувший его безжизненное тело.
